Beware of opening Microsoft Word Attachments
Newly Discovered Exploit Puts Word Users At Risk
Microsoft Rushing to Issue Security Patch
Over the weekend, Internet security experts discovered a vulnerability in all supported versions of Microsoft Word that can be used to silently install malware. Microsoft has promised to issue a security patch to fix the vulnerability this week. In the meantime, we strongly recommend that Word users ensure the Protected View feature is enabled in Office’s Trust Center settings. Although this security feature is enabled by default, we suggest you double check to make sure this feature is turned on.
To make sure Protected View is turned on, from within Word
- Click on File…
- Click on Options…
- Click on Trust Center…
- Click on Trust Center Settings…
- Click on Protected View…
- Check that all check boxes are checked
- Click OK
What you can do to protect against a potential attack:
- Do not open any Office files obtained from untrusted locations.
- Share Office documents via ShareSync rather than send them as attachments.
- Immediately install the Microsoft security patch when your computer notifies you the patch is pending (Ntelogic Care Free PC subscribers will have this patch installed automatically).
